Post
February is where everything became real. I’d been shooting and processing film (10 rolls!) all through January. It was now time to print. Did I still have the same ‘eye’ I had when I was 18? I’d also signed a lease for art studio space and had moved in. It was time to make art. I felt like an imposter. I had been a month or more since I worked on any of my apps.
This was the month my Analog Year started. It’s probably no accident that its beginning coincided with the New Year and also the beginning of my 54th year on this planet. I’d been feeling stuck for a while. Months. Maybe years. My birthday gift to myself was to finally do something about it. I decided to do less.
We all know “that couple” — some of us know more than one — who are unkind to each other. Not in big ways, but rather infinite tiny ways. Little, countless cuts, every day.
For some us, we are that couple.
Love shouldn’t be complicated. Work shouldn’t be complicated.
Happiness and peace of mind and wellbeing definitely shouldn’t be complicated.
We make it all so much harder than it’s meant to be.
Food is hard, man. And most of us have some strain with it — eating too much, too little, over-thinking it, under-thinking it, or just not knowing what we’re supposed to eat… food is hard.
A few weeks ago, a colleague IMed me just after 7:30 pm. It took me exactly 16 minutes to respond.
The next morning, she took it upon herself to sit me down and lecture me on the importance of “being reachable” and “response time.”
I think everyone who has ever met me would agree:
I sometimes struggle to, let’s say, “connect with people.”
I’m equal parts withdrawn and then critical — aloof and kinda cold until I come on way too strong and say whatever I want, getting my foot in my mouth.
The most important thing in a relationship is emotional maturity.
And the most important part of emotional maturity is the ability to take responsibility.
